Visa and immigration appointments in Mexico

Get through your INM appointment without freezing up.

After you enter Mexico with a visa stamp from a consulate abroad, you have 30 days to do the 'canje' (exchange) at the Instituto Nacional de Migración (INM). The appointment is short, in Spanish, paper-heavy and very procedural.

Most expats stress about this more than the bank — but the script barely changes. Memorize the phrases below and you'll be in and out in under an hour.

Mexico local tips

Bring everything in a folder, in order

Passport, visa sticker, printed appointment, formato básico, comprobante de pago de derechos, and 2 copies of each. Agents move fast — fumbling slows you down.

The canje window is 30 days, no exceptions

Miss it and you start the consulate process over. Book the cita the same week you arrive.

Address must match a comprobante

Bring a utility bill or carta de residencia in case they ask to verify the address you give.

Practice prompts

  1. 01Introduce yourself at reception, state your appointment time and the type of trámite.
  2. 02Spell your full name out loud in Spanish, letter by letter.
  3. 03Give your Mexican address using calle, número, colonia and ciudad.
  4. 04Ask 3 follow-up questions: when the card arrives, where to pick it up, and how CURP works.

FAQs

Is the INM appointment in English?

Almost never. Some agents understand basic English but the trámite is conducted in Spanish. Practice the canje script in advance.

What's the difference between residencia temporal and permanente?

Temporal is 1–4 years and renewable. Permanente is indefinite and lets you work without extra permits. You usually get temporal first and switch later.

How long does the whole canje process take?

The appointment itself is 30–60 minutes. The physical card arrives in 2–4 weeks by email notification.
