Taking Uber and taxis in Mexico

Confirm pickup, change the route, and survive the chat.

Uber and Didi are everywhere in Mexico's cities and 95% of the rides go smoothly in silence. The 5% when you need Spanish: confirming a confusing pickup, changing the route, or making small talk with a chatty driver — which is basically a free language class.

Confirming pickup over the phone

Driver calls because the pin is off.

  • Chofer

Joven, estoy llegando pero no lo veo. ¿En qué esquina está?

Hey, I'm arriving but don't see you. What corner are you on?

  • You

Estoy en la esquina de Álvaro Obregón y Orizaba, frente al Starbucks.

I'm on the corner of Álvaro Obregón and Orizaba, across from the Starbucks.

  • Chofer

Va, en dos minutos llego. Voy en un Nissan blanco.

Got it, I'll be there in 2 minutes. White Nissan.

Changing the destination mid-ride

You decide to get out earlier.

  • You

Disculpe, ¿me puede dejar aquí en la esquina mejor?

Sorry, could you drop me at the corner here instead?

  • Chofer

Claro, ¿le ajusto la dirección en la app?

Sure, want me to fix the address in the app?

  • You

No se preocupe, yo lo arreglo. Gracias.

Don't worry, I'll handle it. Thanks.

Mexico local tips

Drivers often call before arriving

Especially in CDMX where pins can land 100m off. Be ready with your cross streets in Spanish.

Never take unmarked street taxis at night

Use Uber, Didi, or sitios (authorized taxi stands) outside restaurants and hotels.

Tipping is appreciated but not required

10–20 pesos for a good ride is standard if you tip.

Practice prompts

  1. 01Tell a driver over the phone what corner you're on and what landmark you're next to.
  2. 02Ask the driver to pull over earlier than the pinned location.
  3. 03Explain that you put the wrong address and ask to change route.
  4. 04Handle 2 minutes of small talk: where you're from, how long you've been in Mexico, what you do.

FAQs

Is Uber safer than street taxis in Mexico?

Generally yes — Uber and Didi log the trip, driver and passenger. Street taxis (especially unmarked) carry real risk after dark in some cities. Sitios are a safe middle ground.
