Visa and immigration appointments in the Dominican Republic

Handle the DGM and Migración in Santo Domingo with confidence.

The Dirección General de Migración (DGM) handles residency in the DR, with most appointments at the main office in Centro de los Héroes, Santo Domingo. Common expat routes are 'rentista', 'jubilado' (retiree), 'inversionista' and 'familiar de dominicano'.

Most steps involve an immigration lawyer because the paperwork is unforgiving and the windows close fast. The script below covers the in-person appointments that follow your lawyer's filing.

Dominican Republic local tips

Use a real immigration lawyer

DR residency is paperwork-heavy and unforgiving. A lawyer ($800–$2,500) saves you from missed steps, rejected files and trip-back-to-home-country apostille redos.

Apostille everything in your home country first

Birth certificate, marriage certificate, criminal record — every foreign document needs a Hague apostille from the issuing country. The DR will reject anything missing it.

Cédula comes from the JCE, not DGM

After DGM approves residency, the foreigner cédula is issued by the Junta Central Electoral. Your lawyer schedules that pickup separately.

Practice prompts

  1. 01Check in at DGM using usted, stating your appointment and category.
  2. 02Spell your full name out loud in Spanish, letter by letter.
  3. 03Explain your rentista category and the source of your foreign income.
  4. 04Ask 3 follow-up questions about provisional vs definitiva, cédula timing, and renewal.

FAQs

Do DGM agents speak English?

Rarely. The trámite runs in Spanish. Your lawyer will usually accompany you and can translate, but expect to answer basic questions yourself.

How long does Dominican residency take?

Provisional residency: 4–8 months. Permanent (after one year provisional): another 4–6 months. Pensionado/rentista applicants under the law can fast-track to permanent.

Do I really need a lawyer?

Technically no, practically yes. Self-filed cases often get rejected for small paperwork issues that cost more in trips and apostille redos than the lawyer fee.
