Visa and immigration appointments in Costa Rica

Handle your DGME appointment in Costa Rica without panic.

The Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería (DGME) handles residency in Costa Rica. The most common expat routes are 'rentista' ($2,500/month for 2 years), 'pensionado' ($1,000/month pension), 'inversionista' ($150k investment) and the newer 'nómada digital' (remote-worker) visa.

Appointments at the main San José office or at BCR-administered citas are short, in Spanish and procedural. Learn the script below and the trámite becomes routine.

Costa Rica local tips

Pay the tasas at BCR before the cita

DGME does not collect fees on-site. Pay at Banco de Costa Rica and bring the comprobante — without it the appointment is canceled.

Apostille is non-negotiable

Every foreign document (birth certificate, marriage certificate, criminal record) needs a Hague apostille from the issuing country. Translations must be by an official translator in Costa Rica.

Resolution takes 8–14 months

Be ready to live on tourist stamps and border runs (now restricted) until DIMEX is issued. Many expats use the precaria printout to prove they are in process.

Practice prompts

  1. 01Check in at DGME using usted, stating your appointment and category.
  2. 02Spell your full name out loud in Spanish, letter by letter.

FAQs

Do DGME agents speak English?

Rarely. The trámite runs in Spanish. Bring a written cheat sheet with your category and key documents in case you blank.

How long does Costa Rican residency take?

Officially 3 months; in practice 8–14 months for rentista and pensionado. Inversionista and nómada digital can be faster.

What's the difference between rentista and nómada digital?

Rentista is permanent-track residency requiring $2,500/month passive income for 2 years. Nómada digital is a renewable 1-year visa for remote workers with $3,000/month income, easier to obtain but not residency.
