Taking Uber and taxis in Costa Rica

Navigate tico roads: Ubers in San José, red taxis at the beach, and the 'how do I get there?' conversation.

Uber is fully legal and widely used in Costa Rica — especially in San José, Escazú and the airport. Red taxis (with the official orange triangle) are the regulated alternative and the only option in some beach towns where Uber hasn't reached. Tico addresses are famously vague ('200 meters north of the old church'), so knowing how to describe your location in Spanish is essential.

Costa Rica local tips

Uber is legal, but airport pickups are tricky

At SJO, Uber drivers sometimes ask you to walk to the departure level or the parking lot. Follow their instructions via WhatsApp.

Red taxis have official meters; piratas don't

Always use red taxis with the orange triangle on the door. 'Pirata' taxis (unmarked) overcharge and are less safe.

Addresses are landmark-based

'200 metros norte de la iglesia vieja' is a normal address. Learn to describe your location using nearby businesses and churches.

Practice prompts

  1. 01Describe your exact location to an Uber driver using two landmarks.
  2. 02Ask a red taxi for a fixed fare to the beach and confirm tolls are included.
  3. 03Negotiate a supermarket stop on the way to your rental.

FAQs

Is Uber available in all of Costa Rica?

Widely in San José, Escazú, the Central Valley and most beach towns. In very remote areas, red taxis or private shuttles are the only option.

Should I tip taxi drivers?

Not required. Rounding up to the nearest 500 colones is enough. For long airport rides, 1,000–2,000 is appreciated.
