Getting a SIM Card ("Chip") in Costa Rica

Chip, recarga, and a state phone company that owns the jungle.

Costa Rica's SIM is a chip, and its carriers are Kolbi (the state company, with the deepest rural and jungle coverage), Liberty, and Claro. Buy the chip with your passport — SIMs are registered — at carrier stores, and in tourist zones at supermarkets and some shops; then top up ('hacer una recarga') at pulperías, supermarkets and pharmacies.

If your plans involve rainforest, coasts, or anywhere the roads get interesting, the local wisdom is Kolbi: where the tourism goes, ICE's towers went first.

Costa Rica local tips

Kolbi for the wild parts

Liberty and Claro are fine in the Central Valley and beach towns; Kolbi's state-built network wins in rural and jungle Costa Rica.

Passport to buy, pulpería to top up

The chip is registered to your passport at purchase; after that, recargas are a counter transaction anywhere.

'Ocupo' means 'necesito'

One word of tico Spanish that instantly recalibrates your ear — textbook Spanish says 'necesito', Costa Rica says 'ocupo'.

Prices in colones, often quoted in 'rojos'

A 'rojo' is a 1,000-colón note (it's red). 'Dos rojos' = ₡2,000.

Pura vida is functional, not decorative

Use it as thanks, as 'no problem', as goodbye. It always lands.

Practice prompts

  1. 01Buy a chip at Kolbi with your passport, asking whether it comes with data — using 'ocupo'.
  2. 02Do a recarga at a pulpería and pay in colones.
  3. 03Ask a tico which carrier works at Santa Teresa, and thank them with the correct amount of pura vida.
