Opening a bank account in Colombia

What to say at Bancolombia, Davivienda or BBVA in Medellín or Bogotá.

Most Colombian banks require a 'cédula de extranjería' (foreign resident ID) — not a tourist visa — to open a full account. Bancolombia is the most expat-popular; Davivienda is the easiest digitally; BBVA has English-friendly staff in El Poblado and Chapinero.

The appointment is in Spanish, paper-heavy and runs through a predictable script. Memorize the phrases below and you'll handle it cleanly.

Colombia local tips

Tourist visa = no full account

Most banks won't open an account on a tourist stamp. You need a migrante (M) or resident (R) visa and the matching cédula de extranjería.

Open Nequi first, big bank later

Nequi (Bancolombia's wallet) opens in 5 minutes with just a CC or CE — great for Rappi, Uber and tiendas while your full account is processing.

Watch the 4x1000 tax

Colombia taxes 0.4% on withdrawals beyond a free monthly cap. You can mark one account as 'exenta del 4x1000' — ask the asesora.

Practice prompts

  1. 01Call the bank in Spanish and ask which documents you need as a foreigner.
  2. 02Explain your remote-work income source and how often money will come in.
  3. 03Ask 3 questions about fees, the 4x1000 tax exemption, and how long the card takes.
  4. 04Politely ask the asesora to repeat or speak slower without sounding frustrated.

FAQs

Can I open a Colombian bank account on a tourist visa?

No — full accounts at Bancolombia, Davivienda and BBVA require a cédula de extranjería. Nequi and Daviplata wallets, however, can be opened with just a passport.

Which Colombian bank is best for expats?

Bancolombia for ubiquity and best app, Davivienda for digital onboarding, BBVA for English-speaking staff in El Poblado and Chapinero.

What is the 4x1000?

A 0.4% tax on most bank withdrawals and transfers. You can register one account as exempt (up to a monthly cap) — ask 'quiero marcar esta cuenta como exenta del 4x1000'.
