Visa and immigration appointments in Chile

Handle SERMIG and Registro Civil without freezing up.

Chile's immigration office is now the Servicio Nacional de Migraciones (SERMIG), replacing Extranjería. The common routes are visa temporaria de oportunidades, profesional, vínculo familiar, and the popular 'visa por motivos laborales'.

Most of the appointment runs online now, but you'll still visit PDI for stamps and Registro Civil for the Cédula. The script below covers the steps that still happen in person.

Chile local tips

Register at PDI within 30 days

Miss the 30-day PDI registration window after entering with a visa and you start paying multas. Book the hora the same week you land.

RUT first, life second

Without a RUT you can't open a bank account, get a phone plan, or sign a rental. The Cédula appointment generates it — treat it as your highest priority.

Most SERMIG steps moved online

The visa application itself is now via the SERMIG online portal. In-person steps are PDI and Registro Civil — bring printed proof of every digital step.

Practice prompts

  1. 01Check in at PDI Extranjería using usted, stating your appointment time and visa type.
  2. 02Explain that you're applying for visa temporaria por motivos laborales (or whichever applies).
  3. 03Ask 3 questions about Cédula timing, RUT activation, and renewal.
  4. 04Politely ask the funcionario to repeat or speak slower without sounding annoyed.

FAQs

Do SERMIG and PDI agents speak English?

Rarely. The trámite runs in Spanish. Have a written cheat sheet with your visa type and key documents in case you blank.

How long does Chilean residency take?

After SERMIG approves your visa online (1–6 months), the in-person PDI + Registro Civil steps take 2–4 weeks. Permanent residency is a separate application after 12–24 months on a temporary visa.

Can I work in Chile on a tourist stamp?

No. You need a visa with work authorization. Working on a tourist stamp risks fines and future visa denials.
