Peru local tips

Pay tasas at Banco de la Nación first

Migraciones doesn't accept payment on-site. Pay each tasa at any Banco de la Nación branch and bring the printed voucher.

Apostille everything in advance

Birth certificates, criminal records and marriage certificates need a Hague apostille from the issuing country, plus official translation in Peru. Budget weeks for this.

Renew the CE before it expires

Prórroga is an online process but the system is slow. Start the renewal 60 days before expiry to avoid multas.

Practice prompts

  1. 01Check in at Migraciones using usted, stating your appointment and trámite.
  2. 02Spell your full name out loud in Spanish, letter by letter.
  3. 03Explain your calidad migratoria and how the income or sponsor backs it.
  4. 04Ask 3 follow-up questions about CE pickup, renewal, and address changes.

FAQs

Do Migraciones agents speak English?

Rarely. The trámite runs in Spanish. Bring a written cheat sheet with your category and key documents.

How long does Peruvian residency take?

Online resolution averages 3–6 months for rentista and trabajador. The CE pickup appointment is usually within 30 days of approval.

Can I work in Peru on a tourist stamp?

No. Working requires a calidad migratoria with work authorization (trabajador, designado) or a residency that allows it (rentista does not by itself).
