Taxis and getting around Nicaragua

Negotiate the fare before you get in — every single time.

Nicaragua doesn't have Uber in most cities, and where it exists (mostly Managua) it competes with InDriver and traditional taxis. The default is: flag a taxi, agree on the fare BEFORE getting in, pay in cash. Taxis are often 'colectivos' — they pick up other passengers along the route.

Knowing how to ask the fare, counter-offer, and tell the driver your exact corner is the difference between paying a fair price and the 'gringo tax' (often double).

Nicaragua local tips

Always negotiate before you get in

Even with a metered-looking taxi, agree on the fare first. Once you're inside, you've lost leverage.

Learn the rotondas in Managua

Managua has no street addresses — directions are 'from Rotonda X, Y blocks toward the lake'. 'Al lago' = north, 'al sur' = south, 'arriba' = east, 'abajo' = west.

InDriver beats taxi in Managua

You set the fare, drivers accept or counter. Usually 20–40% cheaper than flagging a street taxi as a foreigner.

Practice prompts

  1. 01Negotiate a fare from 200 down to 170, expreso, in voseo.
  2. 02Give a Granada address using cuadras al lago / al sur format.
  3. 03Tell the driver to drop you at the corner, not in front.

FAQs

Is it safe to take a taxi in Managua at night?

Use cooperativa taxis (with the company name and number painted on the door), call ahead from your hotel/restaurant, or use InDriver. Avoid flagging unmarked cars after dark.

How do Nicaraguan addresses work?

By landmarks and cardinal directions, not street numbers. 'De la Catedral, 2 cuadras al lago' = '2 blocks north of the Cathedral'. Even mail and Uber use this system.
