Opening a bank account in Nicaragua

What to say at BAC, Banpro or LAFISE in Managua or Granada.

Nicaragua's banks — BAC, Banpro, LAFISE, BDF — are conservative but expat-friendly. Most expats open both córdobas and dollars accounts; the country is heavily dollarized so a USD account is essential. BAC is the most expat-popular, with the cleanest app and English-friendly staff in Plaza España.

Most banks want a cédula de residencia, but BAC and LAFISE will sometimes open a limited account with passport, recommendation letter and a local utility bill. The branch visit is in Spanish, voseo nica, paperwork-heavy.

Nicaragua local tips

USD account is non-negotiable

Nicaragua is heavily dollarized. Rent, big purchases and even some restaurants quote in USD. Open a dollar account in the same visit as the córdobas one.

Reference letter carries real weight

A letter from your home-country bank confirming account standing significantly speeds approval. Get one in English with a Spanish notarized translation.

BAC has the best app, LAFISE the best service

BAC's Credomatic platform is the cleanest digital experience. LAFISE is slower but its staff in Granada and Managua tend to be more patient with expats.

Practice prompts

  1. 01Call the bank in voseo nica and ask which papers you need without residencia.
  2. 02Explain your remote-work income and roughly how much enters monthly.
  3. 03Ask 3 questions about monthly fees, the USD account, and how the card arrives.
  4. 04Politely ask the ejecutiva to repeat or speak slower without sounding rude.

FAQs

Can I open a Nicaraguan bank account on a tourist visa?

BAC and LAFISE will open limited accounts with passport + utility bill + reference letter. Full accounts and dollar accounts usually require cédula de residencia.

Which Nicaraguan bank is best for expats?

BAC for the cleanest app and biggest expat user base, LAFISE for patient service in Granada, Banpro for retail network across the country.

Should I keep money in córdobas or dollars?

Most expats keep a small córdobas balance for daily local expenses (taxis, fritangas, mercados) and store savings in dollars given the historical devaluation pattern.
