Getting a SIM Card in Argentina

Chip, crédito, and a price we refuse to print.

In Argentina the SIM is a chip, the credit is crédito or saldo, and the kiosco — Buenos Aires' every-hundred-meters convenience stand — is where recargas happen, along with Rapipago and Pago Fácil counters and each carrier's app. Carriers: Personal, Claro and Movistar.

Chips must be registered to an identity document (a rule called nominatividad) — foreigners register with a passport, either at purchase in an official store or through the carrier's process. And a note you'll rarely see in guides: we're not printing prices. Argentine inflation makes any number stale before the page loads. Ask, and don't be shocked — in pesos everything sounds enormous.

Real dialogues

Practice both sides out loud.

Recarga at a Buenos Aires kiosco

A kiosco in Palermo. Voseo, che, and zero ceremony.

  • You

    Hola, ¿hacés recargas?

    Hi, do you do top-ups?

  • Kiosquero

    Sí, ¿de qué empresa?

    Yes, which carrier?

  • You

    Personal. ¿Cuánto conviene cargar?

Personal. What amount makes sense to load?

  • Kiosquero

Y… depende del paquete que quieras. Pasame el número.

Well… depends which bundle you want. Give me the number.

  • You

    Once, treinta y ocho…

    Eleven, thirty-eight… (11 38…)

  • Kiosquero

Listo, fijate que ya te llegó.

Done, check — it already arrived.

Argentina local tips

The kiosco is the infrastructure

Chips at kioscos and official stores; recargas at kioscos, Rapipago, Pago Fácil and apps. You're never more than a block from a top-up in Buenos Aires.

Registration is mandatory

Argentine chips are registered to an ID (nominatividad); foreigners use a passport. An unregistered chip can be blocked.

Don't trust any printed price

Including ours, which is why there isn't one. Inflation reprices everything; ask '¿cuánto está?' and treat the answer as today's price only.

Voseo is total

'¿Me cargás?', 'fijate', 'pasame'. Tú will be understood and will mark you instantly as not from here.

WhatsApp is the phone

More than anywhere else in LATAM, Argentine life runs on WhatsApp; a local number matters less than data. Choose your paquete accordingly.

Practice prompts

  1. 01Ask a kiosquero to top up your chip, in voseo, including giving your number.
  2. 02Ask which carrier has the best coverage for a trip to Mendoza.
  3. 03Practice '¿cuánto está?' and reacting to a very large number in pesos without flinching.

FAQs

Do I need ID to buy a SIM card in Argentina?

Yes — chips are registered to an identity document under Argentina's nominatividad rules; foreigners register with a passport.

Where do I top up a prepaid phone in Argentina?

Kioscos everywhere, Rapipago and Pago Fácil counters, or the carrier app.

How much does a SIM card cost in Argentina?

We're deliberately not printing a number — inflation would make it wrong within weeks. It's cheap in hard-currency terms; ask '¿cuánto está?' for today's price.
